Dental Crowns

Your smile is with you forever, that’s why it’s important to invest in the health of your teeth. When your tooth suffers from excessive damage or decay, that a filling cannot restore, we often recommend a dental crown. This dental care treatment provides a protective cap, that covers your remaining healthy tooth, above the gumline. Designed to look like your natural tooth, a dental crown can blend into your existing smile or even enhance it.

Restore Cracked or Damaged Teeth

A dental crown may not make you feel like royalty, but it is one of the premiere treatments for cracked or severely damaged teeth. Dental crowns can also be used to:

  • Hold a dental bridge in place
  • Hide misshapen or severely discolored teeth
  • Cover a tooth after a root canal procedure

Made of either porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic or gold, dental crowns are placed during a multi-step process and sometimes require more than one dental visit. The first step is a dental impression. A temporary tooth colored crown is then placed to protect the tooth while the impression is sent to an offsite laboratory to create the final restoration.

Dental Inlays and Onlays

In some cases, where the tooth damage or decay is not quite as extensive, a dental inlay or onlay may be used instead of a crown. A dental inlay can be compared to a filling, in that it fits neatly inside the top edge of your tooth, helping to conserve your tooth. A dental onlay is more involved, extending over the top edge, to replace lost tooth structure and protect the remaining, healthy tooth.

With good oral hygiene and minimal wear and tear, your beautiful new dental crown, onlays or inlays can last for a long time. For more information on dental crowns, contact us today to schedule an appointment with your premier dentist in Newport Beach, Dr. Omid Haroonian.
